Historic lighthouse keeper's cottage up for sale

A cottage next to Macquarie Lighthouse has been put up for sale, and one lucky buyer will have the chance to say they live next to one of the country's oldest lighthouses.

Located on beautiful South Head Vaucluse, the lighthouse itself has stood since 1883 and it is the second tower built there after the first convict-designed one deteriorated.

You don't have to worry about any noise as there's only one neighbour in sight.

"How many houses can you buy with a lighthouse next door," McGrath sales agent Robert Alfeldi said.

For $12 million, the lucky buyer will get the heritage home that was built 1881, with most of its original fittings still in tact and an old stables building, perched on 2600 square metres of land.

Although the property has kept most of its original elements, the interior - specifically the kitchen and bathroom - have been updated into more modern versions of the original.

However, those looking to renovate the property and add a second floor should look for a different property as it is a heritage home, so it limits what future owners can add.

“It’s quite a unique property. People show up thinking they can put a second storey on. But it is what it is for a reason," Alfeidi said.

Iconic properties like this don't go for sale often, and tends to create a buzz among wealthy potential buyers.

The property was previously sold in October 2016 for $7 million.

Images: Domain/ Nine

1886 cottage of Australian icon goes under the hammer

The home that once belonged to the woman featured on Australia’s $20 bill has been listed for an auction.

Built around 1886, the four-bedroom, two-bathroom house in Hunters Hill, in Sydney’s lower north shore, has been listed with a $4.25 million price guide.

The area was first settled by Mary Reibey, a convict who went on to become a successful businesswoman running her own shipping and trading enterprises.

Since 1994, her face has been featured on the $20 note.

She was known in the Hunters Hill area for building two small cottages to house convict labour for Figtree House, a farm that still stands today.

If the home sells for its multi-million listing price and its new owner were to pay in $20 notes, they would need more than 210,000 - or about 10 briefcases worth.

Its current owner, who wished not to be named, is selling the home after living there for a decade and is looking to downsize now their adult children have left home.

In a statement shared with The Daily Telegraph, the vendors said they kept many of the original period features of the weatherboard home, including a vintage fireplace, out of a passion for its heritage.

“Over time the house was extended to take advantage of its perfect northern aspect, so its rambling layout has really suited our family, especially as the children got older,” they said.

“We love sitting on the veranda soaking up the all-day sun, especially at this time of year when the area’s deciduous trees come into leaf and it’s awash with jacarandas.”

“Hunters Hill has an incredible history on every corner – it truly feels like a little French village on the harbour.”

While historic features have been maintained, the home has also had its share of updates, including French doors that open to the wraparound verandah and an island kitchen with a gas stove top and modern appliances.

Simon Harrison, the principal agent at Belle Property Hunters Hill who listed the home, said the 524-square-metre property had already garnered some interest due to its character.

“We’ve had a lot of interest from growing families and young couples, it’s a great location and a character home that has really appealed to potential buyers,” Mr Harrison said.

“I think the knee-jerk reaction to the initial interest rate rises has settled down and we’re now seeing a new norm where buyers are willing to pay the right price for weatherboard homes like this one which don’t come around too often.”

Images: Belle Property Hunters Hill

Why carers need time out too

When we think of “aged care”, all too often our thoughts leap to hard-working nurses caring for the elderly, either in respite centres, retirement villages or via in-home care. But what about the unsung heroes of aged care we don’t hear quite so much about?

Those unsung heroes are the everyday family and informal carers who take the time to look after an older family member or loved one to ensure they are comfortable – and yet they often do so without receiving the support or help they deserve.

In fact, incredibly, there are a surprising number of people in that position who aren't even aware they ARE considered official "carers", and as such are entitled to support for their own health and wellbeing.

It’s so important for these carers to be given the chance to take a break from their responsibilities, so that they can continue to look after their loved ones properly.

That’s why Resthaven places such an emphasis on looking to improve the quality of life not just for elderly Australians but also their carers.

To this end, they offer quality residential aged care and in-home care services, retirement living, and wellness services in Adelaide and regional South Australia – all while campaigning to challenge the negative stereotypes that often come with aged care, and continuously looking to better their services.

To begin with, there are a few basic questions that Resthaven asks so that carers are actually aware they are carers in the first place, and therefore entitled to valuable support.

Do you provide daily support to a person without being paid?

If you did not provide this support, would this person be unable to complete the tasks themselves? (Support may include shopping, paying bills, assisting with showering, making meals, providing transport etc.)

Is the person unsafe when left alone for long periods of time?

Has the person been diagnosed with dementia or a severe disability?

Is the person you support frail or aged (over 65)?

If any of these situations apply to you, then you are recognised as a carer and are entitled to support for your own health and wellbeing.

Resthaven is committed to assisting carers alongside their everyday activities ranging from work, social engagement, an appointment, medical procedure, a volunteer commitment among other things.

“A little respite support can sustain carers so they can continue their caring role, and the person they care for can stay living at home for longer,” a Resthaven spokesperson says.

“Respite also provides carers and the people they care for with an experience of different care facilities that may be required in the future.”

Resthaven offers caring, high-quality services for the person under your care and is also flexible to work around your schedule.

The different types of respite on offer from Resthaven include:

In-home Respite
If the older person you’re caring for prefers to stay in their home, then Resthaven staff provide assistance by supporting their lifestyle. Based on a member’s government assessment process and availability, a suitable place in Resthaven is then considered. A short period of residential respite offers carers the opportunity to have a break, a holiday, or simply some time out from their busy schedule. The person being cared for will be able to access the benefits of the site’s activities, social programs, library and internet café.

So if you’re in need of support or would simply like to know more about Resthaven’s aged care options, now’s the time to find out how they can be of service to you.

All images: Courtesy of Resthaven.

This is a sponsored article produced in partnership with Resthaven.

Explorer finds abandoned cottage with dirty dishes still in the sink

UK-based YouTuber and urban explorer Daniel Sims, who goes by BeardedReality on YouTube, discovered an abandoned house in Anglesey, Wales, that included such finds as dirty dishes waiting to be washed in the sink, a gramophone, cabinets with shelves of china, and a taxidermied pheasant.

Sims, who is from West Yorkshire, regularly explores abandoned and forgotten buildings and structures, a hobby known as ‘urban exploration’, or Urbex for short. He found this particular home following a recommendation from a fellow explorer, and decided to investigate the site with his friend Charlotte.

They found a home on a vast stretch of land, complete with two caravans in the yard. Searching the caravans first, the pair found dishes, both clean and unwashed, scattered across the kitchen counter and sink. Sims described the caravan as having been left to overgrow.

In the main house, the finds were a lot more varied. The front door and some windows had been left open, and an eclectic collection of art, homewares and technology was soon discovered. This included a framed Kellogg’s cornflakes advertisement, old photographs, and artworks that Sims said have obviously been damaged over time due to their exposure to the elements.

Other discoveries included a gramophone, speakers, old records, a computer scanner and an old keyboard, as well as cabinets with shelves full of china. A variety of different wallpapers can be seen peeling off the walls throughout the house. In one of the final rooms he looked through, Sims found a single taxidermied pheasant in a glass case.

While Sims said the place looked ‘foreboding and kind of creepy’, he nonetheless found it a fascinating place to explore, explaining, “It’s crazy to see what is left behind in a property like this, as it is kind of like the people that used to own the place are still there or just left, but you can clearly see that a vast amount of time has gone by with these items left out.

“It felt like we were seeing a part of history that not many people get to experience, such as old artefacts and old brands that have long gone and disappeared from the shelves.”

Image: YouTube

Why respite care is so important for informal carers

Marissa Sandler is the CEO and co-founder of Careseekers. Previously a social justice lawyer and researcher for over 15 years, Marissa is passionate about helping people live with dignity and finding innovative solutions to problems.

The end of the year is a great time of year, no school traffic, quiet streets and most of Australia takes a break. However, if you are an informal carer this may not be the case. Caring is a full-time job and doesn’t stop because its summer or Christmas or New Years. It is however very important that as a carer you do take a break. The best way to do this is by engaging respite care services of some description.

Here are some fast facts to read about respite care so that you can take a break over the festive season.

What is respite care?

Respite care is care that is taken over by someone else to relieve an informal carer of their care giving duties for a loved one.

How does it work?

Respite care can be delivered in many forms.

1. Respite care in the home – A care or support worker can come into your home and take the load off you by looking after a loved one for a few short hours or even a few days/weeks. Connecting directly to care and support workers on platforms like Careseekers is one way to find people who deliver respite care services.

2. Respite care in the community – Most local communities have adult day centres or neighbourhood centres where a loved one can go for the day. They will do casual drop ins as well on days when you may be feeling extra frazzled.

3. Residential based respite care – This type of centre enables loved ones to stay for an extended period of time – a few weeks and can be helpful if you need to travel.

4. Family or friend care respite – Close family and friends may be available to help you, especially if you open up and explain your situation and how additional help would lighten your load. There are also organisations who can send a volunteer to do some respite care.

Emergency respite care and information on other types of respite care is available through My Aged Care or The Carer Gateway.

Real life story

It was difficult for Cathy to watch her vivacious, opinionated mother Mary spiral into the depths of dementia. As her mother deteriorated further, Dora and her siblings assessed their options. They were adamant about keeping Mary at home. Luckily Cathy was able to move in with her mother and take on a full time caring role.

Caring can be exhausting and Cathy soon found she needed some time out. With her other siblings unable to help, the family decided to hire in-home care workers. During her time off Cathy would book into a hotel and just have some down time. It made all the difference to the type of carer she was to her mum during the week. “It really recharged me for the week ahead. I was more patient and as a result mum was happier. If you are a full-time carer for a loved one you just have to have some time out.”

Hearty beef cottage pie with garlic mash

Nothing beats a home-made pie! This recipe combines the classic beef pie with a garlic mash that will soon become an all-time favourite.

Ingredients:

400 g potatoes

½ brown onion

1 clove garlic

2 carrots

1 zucchini

3 sprigs rosemary

3 sprigs thyme

2 tbs butter

3 tbs milk

1 tbs olive oil

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

1 tbs Worcestershire sauce

1 tbs plain flour

½ cup warm water

1 cube beef stock

300g diced beef

2 stalks celery

Method:

1. Boil a full kettle of water. Peel the potato and chop into 2 cm cubes. Peel and crush the garlic.

2. Place the potato and boiling water from the kettle in a medium saucepan over a high heat. Boil for 10-15 minutes, or until the potato is soft when pierced with a knife. Drain and set aside in a colander to allow the excess moisture to evaporate. Return the saucepan to a low heat and add the garlic, butter and milk. Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until fragrant. Turn off the heat. Return the potato to the saucepan and mash using a potato masher or fork. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Cover to keep warm.

3. Meanwhile, finely chop the brown onion, peel and dice the carrots, dice the zucchini and celery and pick and finely chop the rosemary and thyme leaves. Heat the olive oil in a medium frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the brown onion, carrot, zucchini and celery and cook for 5-6 minutes, or until softened. Add the rosemary and thyme and cook for a further 1-2 minutes, or until fragrant.

4. Add the diced beef and plain flour and cook for 2 minutes, or until browned. Add the Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce (if using), warm water and crumble in the beef stock cube. Stir to combine. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes to develop the flavours.

5. Preheat the grill to high. Spoon the beef mixture into a small pie dish or individual ramekins. Top with the garlic mash. Place the pie under the grill and cook for 7-8 minutes, or until golden on top.

6. Remove the hearty beef cottage pie with garlic mash from the grill and divide between plates.

Recipe courtesy of Hello Fresh.

Have you ordered your copy of the Over60 cookbook, The Way Mum Made It, yet?
